On September 17, 2024, EuroCham Vietnam and Mekong Club successfully hosted a comprehensive Training Social Responsibility for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), focusing on raising awareness about forced labor and fostering fair labor practices. The event was aimed at equipping SMEs with the knowledge and tools to identify, prevent, and mitigate labour risks in their supply chains.
Understanding Forced Labor in Business Operations
One of the primary topics discussed during the training was forced labor—a serious issue that continues to affect many industries globally. Participants were introduced to the definition and different forms of forced labor, such as involuntary work, human trafficking, and debt bondage, which are often hidden in supply chains. SMEs were urged to recognize their responsibility in ensuring that all employees, both direct and in subcontracted work, are protected from exploitation.
Raising Awareness Among SMEs
While many large corporations have implemented Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) policies by the European Commission, SMEs often lack the resources or knowledge to fully address social responsibility, particularly regarding labor rights. The training provided these businesses with crucial insights into how forced labor can affect not only workers but also the reputation and sustainability of their operations. SMEs were encouraged to take a proactive approach to prevent labor violations by adopting transparent, ethical labor practices.

Practical Steps Towards Fair Labor Practices
In addition to highlighting the importance of awareness, the training session also emphasized practical strategies that SMEs can implement to promote fair treatment of workers. These include:
Experts at the event discussed real-world examples of businesses that have successfully eradicated forced labor from their operations, serving as models for SMEs in attendance.
Towards Sustainable and Ethical Business Practices
This training is part of ’s ongoing efforts of EuroCham Vietnam in general and Mekong Club in particular to promote sustainable and ethical business practices across Vietnam. By offering practical guidance and raising awareness, the university hopes to contribute to a future where businesses not only thrive economically but also contribute positively to the welfare of their employees and society as a whole.
